We reach around a thousand people per day who are interested in what’s happening around our fair borough of Brooklyn. If you’d like to reach that audience, we’d love to help. We are looking to craft a solid list of interesting Brooklyn businesses that need more exposure. We’ll work with your budget because we’d rather have highly relevant, local business owners in front of our readers. E-mail us here.

Oh, and we’re all over Facebook, Twitter, and a lot of people trust us with their e-mail address, so we can talk about options for getting the word out in real time if you have something that needs to get out there immediately.

ActNow Foundation Opens Up Black History Month 2011 with New Independent Film Festival at BAM

New York, NY/ January 13, 2010 - Fort Greene based ActNow Foundation, in conjunction with BAMcinématek and NYC Council Member Letitia James, present a new screening series reflecting African Diaspora communities in Brooklyn and beyond.

The New Voices in Black Cinema Screening Series is a multi-genre showcase promoting appreciation for Black independent film. Choosing excellence over spectacle and boldness over standard fare, New Voices in Black Cinema exposes audiences to the nuanced experiences of people of color. Taking place February 4th to the 9th at BAM Rose Cinemas, this program is an extension of ActNow’s ongoing screening series at BAMcinèmatek, which premiered Idris Elba & Thomas Ikimi’s festival hit LEGACY last summer, and in 2009 showed the stirring documentary on soul music legend Bill Withers, STILL BILL. The series continues ActNow Foundation’s mission of giving independent filmmakers the opportunity to present their stories to audiences on a grand scale.

The February program will feature films with a socio-political beat, including journalist dream hampton’s documentary BLACK AUGUST, which focuses on the grassroots efforts to raise awareness about political prisoners and features performances by Hip-Hop artists such as Mos Def and Talib Kweli, as well as Clint Dyer’s SUS, an intense drama reflecting on British laws exploited by police in the 1970s to arrest random black men on suspicion, or 'sus', alone. More personal films will also be shown, such as MONEY MATTERS, Spike Lee protégé Ryan Richmond’s moving family drama starring Aunjanue Ellis (Ray, Undercover Brother) and I WILL FOLLOW, starring Salli Richardson (I Am Legend) as a woman struggling with the death of her aunt to breast cancer.
